Eon has been training for years with his master on dragon magic in order to become a Dragoneye and the time for the choosing ceremony is coming up. Eon is his master, Heuris Brannon's, last hope because of Eon's power to see all of the dragon's instead of just one. The main problem to this is that Eon has a deadly secret and that is that he is actually a she. Females aren't seen as capable of learning dragon magic because they see the female eye of incapable of seeing more than themselves. So by training like this, they risk a chance of being killed if the secret is revealed.
The choosing day finally comes and Eon figures that he is as ready as he can be. He found a way to get around his disability and still have a chance of being picked. However, there was a change of events when the current Ascendant Dragoneye, Lord Ido, comes to the ceremony and decides to change the ceremony into the old ways which was a battle between instructors and the students. After losing in his battle, Eon is crushed and at the choosing is not picked. Instead, the other apprentice, Dillon, is chosen. When it looks like all is lost, the long lost Mirror Dragon comes back and chooses Eon as it's Dragoneye. Ido becomes furious and Eon becomes an Ascendant Dragoneye.
Eon lives in the palace for a while and learns the ways. Along the way, Eon makes friends with Lady Dela, Ryko, and even the Prince. At one point, Brannon is poisoned by Lord Ido for being the master of Eon. As tensions rise in the country, Eon is tugged in more directions as he is looked at as a symbol of the resistance and the hope of the emperor.
Ido kills all the other Dragoneye in order to create an ancient weapon said to be granted to the lone Dragoneye when all the others are killed. Eon and his friends survive and try to find a way to stop Ido. In a final confrontation, Eon learns the name of his dragon which is the same as his true name as a woman, Eona. They finally become one and Eon, or Eona as she is now called, and her dragon force compassion into Ido before making a clean getaway.
