Eon - The main character and protagonist of the book. A crippled Dragoneye candidate who ends up being picked by the Mirror Dragon. He has a secret and it is that he is actually a she. Has the ability to see all dragons even though she is female and has the ability to connect to the Rat Dragon even after being chosen by the Mirror Dragon.
Ido - The antagonist of the book. The Ascendant Dragoneye which makes him the Rat Dragoneye. He works for High Lord Sethon who wants to be the emperor and Ido plans to help him achieve that goal no matter what. Commonly takes a drug called Sun Drug which is basically a steroid to make him stronger and to connect with his dragon better.
Ryko - A Moon Shadow who guards Lady Dela. He is from the island that has been oppressed. His life used to involve thieving and fighting but his time is now spent guarding Lady Dela. He is now a part of the Islander Resistance who also is for the emperor so Eon is a sign of hope for him as well. Ryko takes Sun Drug which means that he is still bulky and big despite being a Moon Shadow
Dillon - One of Eon's fellow apprentices until he is chosen by the Rat Dragon at the ceremony. This means that he is Ido's new apprentice. After he becomes Ido's apprentice he begins to change into an angry, irritable, paranoid boy. It turns out that Ido beats him and forces him to take the Sun Drug. In the end, he runs off after taking a folio from Eon.
Lady Dela - A woman from another country who stays in the palace. She is the person who helps Eon through his time in the palace. She teaches and protects him as he goes through this entire ordeal. Has a good amount of both Sun and Moon energy which means that while she is a man, she is also a woman and that is why she is so valued by the Emperor.
